Social Media Coordinator (Full-time)

As we continue to grow our editorial team at The TRiiBE, we’re in search of a Social Media Coordinator who is committed to community journalism that serves Black Chicago communities. We’re committed to creating high-quality and original multimedia content that visually tells stories about the people and communities we cover.
The Social Media Coordinator will work closely with our team of reporters and editors to produce a range of compelling stories, spanning news, sports and features, across our social media channels. The Social Media Coordinator’s primary responsibilities will include planning, producing, publishing and monitoring social media.
The Social Media Coordinator should be deeply familiar with key social platforms, including Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, Twitter and Facebook. Ultimately, this role is about executing a successful strategy for social media publishing that informs and meets our readers wherever they engage with news.
The ideal candidate is a proactive team player who knows how to work on deadline, is willing to learn, and has an understanding of underserved Black communities in Chicago, and the frayed relationship between them and journalism. They will have newsroom experience, the highest ethical standards, a healthy competitive spirit, and a passion for growth and innovation in an ever-evolving digital media landscape.
This position is based in Chicago and employs a hybrid work model: the team works in-office on Mondays and Wednesdays from 9:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and remotely on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
This is a FULL-TIME position (40 hours per week) with benefits (unlimited PTO & company holidays; dental, health and vision insurance, etc). Salary: $50,000 – $58,000.
+ KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
— Populate social accounts on a 24/7 schedule
— Write smart, engaging headlines and captions to maximize clickthrough and engagement on all stories
— Pitch stories to editorial staff
— Coordinate responsive advertising spends on various social channels
— Identify the posts that are performing or will perform for the audience
— Act as eyes and ears on social platforms, alerting the newsroom to breaking news
— Coordinate the creation of platform-specific content with our Editorial teams, including text, photo, video, and interactive
— Translate content so that it appeals to the different user experiences and consumption habits across different social networks
— Work cooperatively as a team member under tight deadlines
+ QUALIFICATIONS
— 2+ years of experience in journalism and social media
— Must have experience working in a newsroom
— Strong communication skills, both written and verbal; good headline writing
— An understanding of what breaking news is
— Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with tight deadlines
— Familiarity with content management systems such as WordPress, Sprout or Hootsuite, photo editing software — SEO and web analytics tools a plus
— Willingness to work overtime, weekday nights and on weekends
— Friendly and outgoing personality

Digital Engagement Editor (Full-time)

As we continue to grow our editorial team at The TRiiBE, we’re in search of a Digital Engagement Editor to help us better understand our readership and build a loyal audience. The Digital Engagement Editor will be responsible for headline writing, optimizing stories for search engines, developing and driving social media and newsletter strategies and drawing actionable insights from data analytics.
Additionally, the Digital Engagement Editor will be a liaison between our editorial team and our tech team, working on strategies to increase engagement with new and current readers. The Digital Engagement Editor will report to our Editor-in-Chief.
The ideal candidate will have experience in meeting deadlines in a newsroom environment and writing clean copy. They also will have an understanding of underserved Black communities in Chicago, and the frayed relationship between them and journalism.
This position is based in Chicago and employs a hybrid work model: the team works in-office on Mondays and Wednesdays from 9:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and remotely on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
This is a FULL-TIME position (40 hours per week). Salary range $55,000 – $68,000 based on experience — a raise in salary will be considered after the first year of employment.
+ KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
— Manage The TRiiBE’s social media accounts on Facebook, Twitter, TikTok and Instagram, while exploring opportunities to expand to, Reddit and other up-and-coming social platforms.
— Use analytics and surveys to tell us more about who our audience is and how they use our content. Then using this data to expand our readership and create a larger impact in the Chicago journalism ecosystem.
— Work with the Editorial team to maximize search engine optimization and workshop SEO-optimized headlines.
— Work with the Tech and Editorial teams to strategize newsletter subscription growth.
— Attract and acquire new audiences and deepen engagement with them across platforms, including the newsletter.
— Work with The TRiiBE team to grow their presence on social media.
— Identify areas of growth through distribution on off-site platforms such as Apple News and Flipboard.
+ QUALIFICATIONS
— Degree in communications, journalism or equivalent experience and education.
— Strong writing and editing skills with keen attention to detail.
— At least 2 years of reporting experience, which includes freelancing or internships.
— Experience with analytic tools, such as Google Analytics and Sprout Social.
— Proven experience with SEO and creating and executive social media strategies.
— Be an effective communicator who knows how to work collaboratively across departments.
— Ability to set and abide by project deadlines and prioritize projects.
— Deep interest in keeping up with digital trends and forecasting.

Digital News Editor (Full-time)

As we continue to grow our editorial team at The TRiiBE, we’re in search of a Digital News Editor to help us reimagine the way we tell important news stories to our Black Chicago audience. The Digital News Editor will be responsible for managing the day-to-day news section of The TRiiBE: publishing multiple timely news stories each week, editing staff and freelance news reporters, filing FOIA requests, digging through official documents and data, assigning stories to staff and freelance reporters, and guiding staff and freelance reporters through longform features and investigations.
Additionally, the Digital News Editor will work with our Social Media team to write breaking-news copy to post on our social channels (Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, etc) in a timely manner; and work with our Editor-in-Chief to send out a daily News newsletter to our readers.
The ideal candidate will have experience in breaking news, managing/mentoring reporters and an established knowledge of Black Chicago and the decades of systemic failures that continue to plague the community.
This position is based in Chicago and employs a hybrid work model: the team works in office on Mondays and Wednesdays from 9:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and remotely on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. This is a position under the supervision of the Editor-in-Chief.

+ KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
— Writing and editing news stories
— Fact checking
— Assigning stories, dispatching reporters into the field for story assignments, and guiding them through the reporting and writing process.
— Administrative duties related to the successful running of the editorial team
— Publishing stories to WordPress or similar content management systems
— Working in Google Suite (Google Docs, Google Sheets, etc) for editing
— Writing and publishing a daily newsletter using Mailchimp or similar software
+ QUALIFICATIONS
— Degree in journalism, media, communications or related fields
— At least 2 years of management experience in an editorial role in digital media
— Have a detail-oriented and resourceful approach to editing and writing
— Have a strong interest in Chicago news and politics, especially related to Black Chicagoans
— Have a strong knowledge of AP and house style guides
— Be able to come up with cool and innovative editorial visions for News coverage that The TRiiBE’s audience will be able to read and share; and also bring the vision to fruition
— Be comfortable managing multiple tasks at once and the ability to work independently
— Be comfortable working with other editors and independent outlets on occasional reporting and publishing partnerships
— Be able to problem solve, work well under pressure and on deadline
— Have experience managing reporters and freelancers
— Must be a self-starter and dependable employee
— Be a good communicator who is unafraid to ask questions and talk to sources on the phone, through Zoom or in person
— Be comfortable using Slack
— Be comfortable traveling within the city for work-related reasons (interviews, meetings, etc)

Managing Editor (Full-time)

As we continue to grow our editorial team at The TRiiBE, we’re in search of a Managing Editor — who is committed to community journalism that serves Black Chicago communities— to manage our growing newsroom.
The Managing Editor is a senior leadership role within The TRiiBE newsroom. The Managing Editor’s primary responsibility will include executing The TRiiBE’s editorial mission, supporting newsroom editors and reporters, and working collaboratively across the newsroom with editorial, social and web teams to conceive and produce high-quality civic and explanatory journalism that speaks to our Black Chicago audience.
The ideal candidate will be a collaborative team player with experience developing newsroom teams. They will have experience in editing, writing clean copy and meeting deadlines in a newsroom environment. They must be comfortable working with executive newsroom leaders, reporters, editors and photographers with varying experience levels, developing them in the practice of community-centered reporting. They also will have an understanding of underserved Black communities in Chicago, and the frayed relationship between them and journalism.

— Manage a growing newsroom, and develop its staff.
— Lead and deliver transformational, clean edits as needed.
— Plan and approve assignments for editors, writers and photographers across multiple platforms (web, newsletter, social media, etc).
— Oversee co-publishing partnerships
— Organize staffing schedules to meet the needs of the news cycles.
— Adhere to best practices around audience analytics and SEO
— Assist with special projects such as The TRiiBE Guide
— Manage the homepage to ensure our latest stories, and most popular stories are present and visible
— Track Editorial performance using Google Analytics and social-media scheduling platforms, such as Sprout
+ QUALIFICATIONS
— Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and work-related experience
— At least 3 years experience in a senior-level position leading a newsroom teams to successful results
— A deep interest in Black media and serving Black news consumers
— Top-notch storytelling experience across a variety of mediums
— Skilled manager of people who can influence a positive, supportive culture.
— Experience with analytic tools, such as Google Analytics and Sprout Social.
— A willingness to adapt and be audience focused with a curious mindset and a commitment to creating an inclusive work environment.
— A strong knowledge of traditional journalism approaches, and an openness to nontraditional approaches to journalism
— Ability to meet deadlines, prioritize assignments, and multi-task in a high-pressure environment.
— Deep interest in keeping up with digital trends and forecasting.
