7:05 p.m.
In an evening update, FBI Director Kash Patel tweeted, “The subject in custody has been released after an interrogation by law enforcement. Our investigation continues and we will continue to release information in interest of transparency.”
5:40 p.m.
At a press conference, Republican Utah Gov. Spencer Cox called Kirk’s death a “political assassination.” He said there is a “person of interest” in custody. That person is being interviewed right now. It is a different person than the man initially detained after the shooting. The initial man who was detained has been released.
“Whoever did this, we will find you,” Cox said.
He also referred to the fatal shooting of Democratic Minnesota state representative Melissa Hortman and her husband in June as political assassinations.
5:25 p.m.
According to Phil Lewis, a person suspected in the fatal shooting of Charlie Kirk is now in custody. FBI Director Kash Patel shared on Twitter that “The subject for the horrific shooting today that took the life of Charlie Kirk is now in custody.”
4:50 p.m.
Charlie Kirk was not shy about his stances as a right-wing agitator. His comments in the past include calling George Floyd, who was murdered by ex-Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin in 2020, a scumbag and repeating debunked rhetoric about Floyd.
Known as a MAGA influencer, Kirk spoke at the Republican National Convention in both 2016 and 2020. He was outspoken in his opposition to the teaching of Critical Race Theory, which he claimed promoted hate.
Kirk was the co-founder of the conservative nonprofit, Turning Point USA. The organization boasted a “Turning Point Live” show, which was aimed at a Gen Z audience. Kirk would often visit college campuses where he called out schools for teaching about this country’s racist history.
Kirk’s history also includes discrediting the Civil Rights Act of 1965 and civil rights activist Martin Luther King, Jr., who was assassinated in April 1968.
“We made a huge mistake when we passed the Civil Rights Act in the 1960s,” Kirk said during a political convention called America Fest in 2023. Kirk referred to King Jr. as “awful.”
Last month, Kirk called for the full military occupation of American cities, supporting Trump in his call to deploy the National Guard to Chicago. In his statements, Kirk said that the country has “a teenage problem,” specifically pointing to Chicago.
“Simple fix. You steal a car, 25 years in prison,” Kirk said. “I don’t care if you’re a teenager. I don’t care if — ‘well, I was raised without a dad.’ Well, you’re going to go meet a new dad in jail. We’re done. We’re not putting up with it. We need more prisons, and we need more prisoners.
In 2023, Kirk also stated that gun deaths were “worth it” to protect our Second Amendment rights.

Former Vice President Kamala Harris released a statement on X (formerly Twitter) after the news of Kirk’s death, denouncing political violence:
“I am deeply disturbed by the shooting in Utah. Doug and I send our prayers to Charlie Kirk and his family,” she wrote. “Let me be clear: Political violence has no place in America. I condemn this act, and we all must work together to ensure this does not lead to more violence.”
Former President Joe Biden also released a statement:
“There is no place in our country for this kind of violence. It must end now. Jill and I are praying for Charlie Kirk’s family and loved ones.”
3:45 p.m.
Charlie Kirk, a 31-year-old, right-wing activist and co-founder of Turning Point USA has died, according to MSNBC.
2:00 p.m.
Kirk was reportedly shot in the neck while giving a speech at Utah Valley University. According to a live update page by NBC News, Kirk was the sole person shot at the event. Kirk is in the hospital in critical condition. Utah Valley University has been closed with classes cancelled until further notice.
Kirk is a known ally of President Donald Trump. Kirk is a native of Arlington Heights, a suburb of Chicago. He’s a known supporter of the Make America Great Again movement.
The shooter is still at large.
LOCAL CHICAGO NEWS:
An emergency rally has been called today by the Chicago branch of the Party for Socialism and Liberation. The rally will take place tonight, Sept. 10, at 8:00 p.m. at Hampton Inn in Downers Grove, at 1500 Opus Place, where federal agents have been reported to be housed. The action follows other anti-Trump protests over the weekend.
“Last night, we disrupted one of the hotels where DHS [Department of Homeland Security] agents are staying, demanding they be denied any further hospitality. Tonight, we’re going back! Join us,” PSL Chicago wrote on its Instagram page.
PSL Chicago is one of multiple organizations that have been hosting resistance actions since President Donald Trump threatened to send federal agents and troops to Chicago. This week, Trump announced that he would be sending the National Guard to a city that wants them there as early as today, reported the Chicago Tribune. Regardless if Trump rescinds his threats or not, he’s still sent a surge of federal agents to the Chicagoland area to carry out his agenda to remove undocumented people.
This week, the Department of Homeland Security announced “Operation Midway Blitz.” According to the department, the plan is in honor of Katie Abraham, an Illinois native who was killed in a car accident by an “illegal alien” while visiting the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign.
In the press release, the agency stated, “This ICE operation will target the criminal illegal aliens who flocked to Chicago and Illinois because they knew Governor Pritzker and his sanctuary policies would protect them and allow them to roam free on American streets.”
The term blitz was used by Nazis during the Second World War. The term is a variation of the German word Blitzkrieg, which means lightning war. Blitz describes a tactic used by Nazi Germany to invade Belgium, Norway, France and the Netherlands. That invasion led to the German occupation of much of Europe.
According to recent reports by Block Club Chicago, ICE arrested three people on the Southwest Side over the weekend, including a man selling flowers on South Archer Avenue and South Pulaski Road. The arrests happened as the U.S. Supreme Court lifted limits on immigration raids, allowing agents to stop suspects based solely on their race or language in Los Angeles.
Over the weekend, a social media post went viral of Chicago’s salt trucks blocking off a section of Grant Park, claiming that the trucks were to thwart ICE but the Department of Streets and Sanitation shut down the rumors, stating that the trucks were for public safety efforts around the Taste of Chicago, which took place last weekend.
