Tuesday wasn’t the first time we’ve heard these revolutionary tunes. “Abolish ICE” and “F–ck CPD” were among the movement chants — sung in chorus to the rhythm of drums — by the thousands of people who marched through downtown Chicago during two mass mobilization actions on Tuesday. An “Emergency Solidarity Rally,” which began around 3:00 p.m. outside the Chicago Immigration Building, soon merged with PSL Chicago’s “From LA to Chicago: ICE Out!” demonstration, which gathered around 5:30 p.m. outside the Federal Plaza.
The goal? It’s two-fold.
- To stand in solidarity with those in Los Angeles protesting President Donald Trump’s intensified immigration raids. Trump deployed the National Guard and the U.S. Marines to quell what his defense secretary, Pete Hegseth, has described as “violent mob assaults on ICE and Federal Law Enforcement” in Los Angeles.
- To denounce Trump’s escalating attacks on immigrants and working-class communities.
“The administration has falsely labeled those taking to the streets in protest of the brutal war on immigrants as ‘rioters’ and called in thousands of National Guard soldiers for a crackdown,” reads a statement on PSL Chicago’s Instagram page. “But we cannot let this repression intimidate us. For those who believe in immigrant rights, for those who believe in democracy, for the entire working class – now is the time to take the streets in protest!”
