It’s lit! As summertime Chi continues, this weekend is a prime example of why Chicago stands in a league of its own. From marquee events drawing crowds from across the country to neighborhood celebrations that capture the city’s spirit, this city will be the place to be. The energy converging here this weekend will set the tone for the rest of the summer.
House music legends will take over Jackson Park on July 11 for the Chosen Few Picnic & Music Festival. This family reunion-like atmosphere makes it one of the most unique festivals in the world. Expect performances from the Chosen Few DJs collective, including the masterful Terry Hunter and Mike Dunn, as well as guest performances from legends like Philly’s own DJ Jazzy Jeff, ghetto house music legend DJ Slugo, Curtis “Move Your Body” McClain, DJ Boolu Master, and more. Tickets are still available, starting at $89.94
The Taste of Chicago returns to Grant Park on July 8-12. Bringing food vendors, live performances and festival energy to downtown Chicago, the Taste has long been considered one of the city’s marquee summer events. In its 46th year, the festival continues to give Chicagoans and visitors a chance to sample local flavors while enjoying one of downtown’s biggest seasonal attractions. The Taste has spent the last few years outside of downtown because of the NASCAR Chicago Street Race, but this summer, the beloved festival returns to its longtime home in Grant Park.
The Taste will see live musical performances from Chicago’s own Common, R&B genius Babyface, Jamaican singer Original Koffee, and more. Admission is free, but you’ve gotta pay for the food.
Welcome to “Chi-ami,” because this weekend, Black people will be taking over Lake Michigan once again. Blvck Scene’s Yacht Weekend offers a different kind of summertime experience, bringing Black nightlife and social culture to the lakefront. Built around music, community and partying on the water, the weekend has become a draw for people looking to celebrate summer in a way that feels distinctly curated for Chicago’s Black social scene.
There are two popular Black yacht weekends in Chicago. Blvck Scene is one of them. Taking place on July 9-12 for its 10-year anniversary, the weekend includes parties and “the main event,” a.k.a. boat day in Lake Michigan’s famous Playpen. Tickets are available here.
