Chicago teens will have free access to select YMCA locations across the city this summer through a new partnership announced by Mayor Brandon Johnson and the YMCA of Metropolitan Chicago.
The “Get Summer Program” will provide free YMCA memberships for Chicago residents ages 12 to 18 from June 8 through the end of August. The initiative gives free memberships to seven YMCA locations across the North, West and South sides of the city.
According to city officials, teens participating in the program will be able to use the Y’s fitness centers, basketball courts, swimming pools during designated hours, gymnasiums and other recreational spaces throughout the summer.
Johnson’s announcement comes after growing complaints and concerns about “teen takeovers.” He said the program is part of the city’s broader effort to create safe and engaging spaces for young people during the summer months.
“Whether they are swimming, playing basketball, using fitness facilities, or connecting with mentors, these experiences build confidence, foster belonging, and open new opportunities,” Johnson said in a statement.
YMCA of Metropolitan Chicago President and CEO Adam M. Alonso said the initiative is designed to remove financial barriers and give teens a place to stay active and connected to their communities.
The announcement also included a new $250,000 Summer Opportunity Fund from Mielle Cares, a Chicagoland-based and Black-owned foundation focused on youth mental wellness. The funding will support the YMCA initiative and the creation of more opportunities for youth to gather.
Participating YMCA locations include Irving Park, Kelly Hall, Lake View, McCormick, Rauner Family, South Side and West Garfield Park.
Teens must provide proof of age and Chicago residency to register. Anyone 17 years old or younger must be accompanied by an adult during registration.
