Sixty years ago, a movement to spotlight and fight against Chicago’s segregated and racist housing policies was led by civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The action, dubbed the Chicago Freedom Movement, was officially launched in 1966 when King moved to Chicago’s West Side neighborhood of North Lawndale to deplore the slum conditions and unfair housing opportunities that Black Chicagoans faced, eventually leading to the Fair Housing Act of 1968.
King’s work in Chicago makes celebrating MLK Day in the city a special occasion, marked by various events and ways to volunteer to honor King’s undying dedication to sacrifice and community upliftment.

Rainbow Push Coalition Day of Service and Learning

Chicago’s storied Rainbow Push Coalition, founded by Rev. Jesse Jackson, will host a multi-day commemoration for King from Jan. 17 to Jan. 19.
Saturday’s Day of Service and Learning will begin with a forum and conclude with service projects both on and off-site.

Forest Preserves of Cook County MLK Day of Service

The Forest Preserves of Cook County have various opportunities and ways to spend the long weekend giving back with activities ranging from litter clean-up to learning how to remove invasive plant species.

Steps of King at Stone Temple
Stone Temple is a historic West Side staple where Dr. King was given a platform to spread his message at a time when many other churches wouldn’t allow the luminary to speak. The church has an event to honor King every year; those interested can show up during the day to volunteer to help with the food drive, to serve food and perform other tasks that may be needed throughout the day.

MBMHMC X YMEN Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service

Youth-focused nonprofits My Block, My Hood, My City and the Young Men’s Education Network are partnering to give back to the community of North Lawndale. The organizations are calling for volunteers to help deliver food, grocery gift cards and resource guides to those in the community.
Having a vehicle to help with deliveries would be helpful, but it is not required to help, according to the organizers. Those who are interested can sign up to volunteer here.
Organic Oneness 8th Annual King Day of Service
Monday, Jan. 19, 2026, 9:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m.
DuSable High School Campus, 4934 S. Wabash Ave.
This service opportunity is coordinated by the grassroots organization Organic Oneness, which focuses on combating racism to create healthy communities across Chicago. During the day, volunteers will receive breakfast, attend a program and walk or be bused to a nearby service project at a school or organization.
Sites include nine schools and community spaces such as Woodson Elementary, Carnegie Elementary, Daniel H. Williams Prep School of Medicine, Hendricks Academy of Excellence, and Imagine Englewood If.

2026 MLK Day of Service: Woodson Elementary

The Metropolitan Board of the Chicago Urban League is looking for assistance in building up Woodson Elementary’s Pre-K building. Volunteers will be expected to help with cleaning and organizing the school’s resource closet, enhancing the indoor recreational space, and improving the school with attractive signage for the building’s entrance.
As of publication, the 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. slots have been filled, but full-day slots are available, as well as 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. slots. Register here.
Cradles to Crayons MLK Day of Service

Cradles to Crayons works to address clothing insecurity for children and hosts a Day of Service for MLK Day annually. For this service opportunity, volunteers will sort donated winter items and assemble outfits for kids in need across Chicago at the organization’s “Giving Factory” in Irving Park.
Those interested can sign up for a shift from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. or from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.
