The TRiiBE is working in collaboration with indie investigative newsroom Unraveled Press and alt-weekly Chicago Reader to bring you confirmed sightings of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and other federal agents in the Chicago area.
Federal agents have been spotted on the city’s Southwest Side this morning. Ring camera video shared to Facebook shows a traffic stop in the Chicago Lawn neighborhood on 62nd Street and Francisco Avenue this morning around 6:50 a.m.
The Southwest Rapid Response Team confirmed more sightings in Chicago Lawn at 63rd and Rockwell Streets, as well as on Kedzie Avenue on 63rd and 55th Streets, this morning between 6:00 am and 8:00 a.m. There have also been confirmed sightings in the western suburb of Aurora, which is about 40 miles from downtown Chicago and
Yesterday, the Huffington Post published an article stating that ICE was considering evacuating its processing facility in west suburban Broadview as protestors continue to demonstrate outside the facility. The publication updated the article hours later: “After initially planning to temporarily close the Broadview facility, the Department of Homeland Security decided Sunday to keep it open and operational, according to agency communications. A DHS spokesperson said allegations the facility was being evacuated were “false.” The Huffington Post story did not cite their source’s name.
Kat Abughazaleh, who is currently running for Congress in Illinois’ 9th District and was thrown to the ground by an ICE officer during a demonstration outside the Broadview ICE facility on Friday, took the Huffington Post news update as more reason to keep fighting.
“This story has been updated to reflect that these rumors are not true. So let’s make them real. See y’all Friday morning at 1930 Beach Street!” Abughazaleh said in a post on BlueSky, referencing the address of the ICE processing center. Demonstrators have been protesting outside of the Broadview ICE facility weekly on Fridays. The TRiiBE, Unraveled and the Chicago Reader covered last Friday’s demonstration, which saw federal agents using excessive force against protestors.
The Chicago Sun-Times reported that all protestors arrested during last Friday’s action have since been released.
Officials with the Department of Homeland Security and Border Patrol went on Fox News, stating that local officials in Illinois are protesting for fame and putting residents and immigrants at risk “just to get on TV, just to get a viral tweet,” Tricia McLaughlin said during the news segment.
Gregory Bovino, chief border patrol agent, stated that arrested protestors are “paying the price” for the “crazy, derisive politicians who banter this rhetoric without regard.”
In response to the Broadview facility remaining open, the Chicago Alliance Against Racist and Political Repression (CAARPR) released a statement saying that their campaign to shut down the facility continues.
“Many other organizations, faith groups and unaffiliated protesters have mobilized to the Broadview facility to obstruct ICE activity and demand they cease operation. All these efforts represent the will of the People to fight back against unprecedented, racist attacks on our Immigrant neighbors, and they must continue,” the statement reads.
As part of the campaign, CAARPR is demanding action from the new Cook County State’s Attorney Eileen O’Neill Burke and Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul “to shut down the facility and investigate the gross human rights violations resulting from the facility being used as a de-facto detention center,” reads the statement.
On Sunday, President Donald Trump upped his calls to bring National Guard troops to Chicago during a memorial service for conservative activist Charlie Kirk. Trump claimed that the last words Kirk said to him before he was fatally shot while speaking at a college in Utah were to “save Chicago.”
3:00 p.m.
The Southwest Rapid Response Team posted on their Instagram that federal agents were spotted on 45th Street and Western Avenue in the Brighton Park neighborhood. According to the rapid response team, the vehicle was heading South in a Ford Expedition with New York license plates between 3:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m.
1:20 p.m.
In a video posted to BlueSky by Unraveled, the publication stated that an agent standing on top of the roof of the Broadview facility shot pepper balls at a small group of protestors standing outside the facility as a white bus backed into the open gate. Sounds that seem to replicate shots can be heard in the video, though the agent isn’t seen shooting when the camera is aimed at him.
12:50 p.m.
In another video posted to BlueSky by Unraveled outside the ICE Broadview facility, a black Jeep drives outside the gate. The jeep was reportedly spotted by rapid responders in McKinley Park earlier today.
11:30 a.m.
Photos captured by a witness show an arrest taking place on 26th Street and Western Avenue in the neighborhood of Little Village. The video was posted to a Facebook group called “REPORTE DE REDADAS DE ICE EN CHICAGO Y ALRREDEDORES,” which translates to ICE RAID REPORT IN CHICAGO AND SURROUNDING AREAS in English.
11:00 a.m.
The Southwest Rapid Response Team confirmed that one person was detained by federal agents on 35th Place between Rockwell Street and Washtenaw Avenue in Brighton Park.
9:40 a.m.
A live video posted to Facebook shows a witness confronting a federal agent who arrested a man in Pilsen. In the video, the person recording exits their vehicle and demands that the agent give them the keys to the car, which is left abandoned after the agent arrests the driver.
“F–cking asshole,” a woman yells at the agent. “Give me his car keys, I’ll go park it.” The agent tells her “no” and then tells her to move as he drives off.
After the agent leaves the scene, bystanders look through the vehicle to retrieve information on the arrested individual.
9:30 a.m.
In its summary of ICE sightings in the area, the Elgin Rapid Response Team confirmed that a Silver Ford Explorer with Illinois plates was seen traveling west on Streamwood Blvd. The group confirmed that federal agents were at the Streamwood Fire Department. Steamwood is a northwest suburb located about 36 miles from downtown Chicago.
Elgin Rapid Response also confirmed federal agent activity in northwestern Hoffman Estates, which is also about 35 miles from Chicago’s downtown.
8:30 a.m.
The Aurora Rapid Response Team confirmed a sighting in the western suburb on Butterfield and Mitchell Roads. According to the rapid response team, there were no arrests at the scene.
8:16 a.m.
La Villita Se Defiende, a coalition of organizations and community members fighting back against immigration enforcement, confirmed that a Subaru that was “previously identified as ICE” was driving north on Western Avenue past 16th Street near Chicago’s Pilsen neighborhood.
In the same Facebook post, La Villita Se Defiende spoke of an earlier sighting of a Black Jeep, “previously identified as ICE,” heading south on Rockwell Street toward Cermak Road in Chicago at 7:44 a.m.
6:50 a.m.
Federal agent sighting on a residential block in Chicago Lawn on 62nd Street and Francisco Avenue. The footage captured by a doorbell camera shows feds surrounding a pickup truck that stops at a stop sign. Several agents hop out of the car and appear to question the occupant of the vehicle.
