The 96th annual Bud Billiken Parade & Festival took place Saturday on Chicago’s South Side.
Affectionately known as “The Bud,” the back-to-school celebration featured actor LaRoyce Hawkins as the grand marshal. Hawkins has had roles in “Chicago Fire,” “Chicago P.D.” and HBO’s “South Side.”
The parade honored Chance the Rapper as its Hometown Hero. And cast members from Showtime’s “The Chi” also made an appearance.
Yearly favorites such as the South Shore Drill Team walked the parade route along Martin Luther King Jr. Drive from Bronzeville to Washington Park. There was lots of footworking, dancing and colorful uniforms.
The Bud is the oldest and biggest African American parade in the country and remains a summertime Chi staple. It concluded in Washington Park with a big festival.
