It’s always a good feeling to see Chance the Rapper on stage.
The 32-year-old Chatham native put on an explosive performance Saturday at Lollapalooza’s Perry Stage, a staple known for its combination of stimulating visuals and EDM vibes. Once tucked away inside of a tent, the Perry Stage — named after Lolla’s founder and Jane’s Addiction frontman Perry Farrell — has become an electrifying outdoor playground with some of the best views of Chicago.
Chano did his big one by choosing to perform a 15-minute “surprise” set at Perry’s. Coming out to his bonafide 2016 anthem “No Problem,” along with a handful of so-named “Star Girls” flaunting physical CDs and posters of his upcoming album Star Line, the moment served as a fun launch of his first full project in six years.
“It looks like the whole [Lollapalooza] park is here now,” Chance said to the buzzing crowd after running through several of his classics: 2016’s “All Night,” 2013’s “Cocoa Butter Kisses” and “Good Ass Intro.”
“I been through it,” he added, taking the crowd through his latest singles, 2022’s “The Highs & The Lows” featuring Joey Bada$$ and this year’s “Tree” featuring Smino and Lil Wayne.
You could feel the heat in the crowd from his use of pyrotechnics on stage, which only hyped everyone up when Chance then told them to mosh to one of the new tracks off his Star Line album, which is scheduled for release on Aug 15.
Only time will tell, but it feels like Chance is back. He’s a great performer and just so talented; whenever he’s on stage, it always feels like he’s back.
