08/31/2025 — WHAT WE’VE HEARD TODAY

The Department of Defense has solidified its plans to post up at Naval Station Great Lakes near North Chicago, which is about 40 miles from downtown Chicago, the Sun-Times reported late last night. The Sun-Times reports the operation would last from Sept. 2-30.
Yesterday, Mayor Brandon Johnson said his office had received credible information that President Donald Trump’s deployment of federal agents could begin as early as Sept. 5.
Either way, Chicago is ready to resist.
On Labor Day, two protests will kick off in Chicago. At 10:00 a.m. on Sept. 1, the Coalition Against the Trump Agenda is encouraging protestors to meet on Adam and Desplaines .
“Our coalition is proud to join what promises to be a historic mobilization of labor forces in the greater Chicago area,” the group wrote on Instagram.
At 11:00 a.m., the group will walk over to Haymarket Memorial, located at 151 N. Desplaines St., to join the “Workers Over Billionaires” rally and march. Described as a national movement for working class power, the goal is to stand against rising fascism.
“As Trump threatens to send federal troops into our city, we know we need the broadest possible unity and all forces who oppose Trump to take to the streets and fight back,” the Coalition Against the Trump Agenda wrote on Instagram.
Organizers also have a preparedness plan to protest once the feds arrive in Chicago.
The coalition, along with the Illinois Coalition for Immigrant & Refugee Rights, have an emergency protest plan called “Chicago Says No Trump, No Troops.” This protest will take place at the corner of Ida B. Wells Drive and Michigan Avenue in downtown Chicago:
- “If Federal Troops are deployed before 3 p.m., we’ll march at 5 p.m. that same day.”
- “If Federal Troops are deployed after 3 p.m., we’ll march at 5 p.m. the next day.”
