“We want to know if you know the name of the sample and the sampled artist,” Rome J. asked Chicago DJ and producer squeakPIVOT right before they played a hilarious game of “Name that Sample” on TRiiBE TV’s “We Real Chicago” show.

Does squeakPIVOT, a core member of the hip hop collective Pivot Gang, rise to the challenge?

“Squeak you’re cheating on your phone,” Rome J. said.

“Look, [Donald] Trump is president,” squeakPIVOT responded.

Hailing from Chicago’s West Side, squeakPIVOT got his start in music when his brother, Frsh Waters, encouraged him to join Pivot Gang. Frsh is one of the co-founders of the group that was formed in 2012 with rappers Saba, Joseph Chilliams, MFnMelo and fallen bandmate John Walt. Pivot Gang producer daedaePIVOT, along with squeakPIVOT, joined the crew later.

During “We Real Chicago,” squeakPIVOT drops some hints about his new project with MFnMelo. The upcoming EP will be squeakPIVOT’s first solo project.

“It’s like 70% done. It’s coming pretty soon — hashtag #EnRoute, because that’s how I’m always coming,” squeakPIVOT said.

Earlier in the show, Rome J. chopped it up with producer, rapper, and singer Gold Haze, who has spent quarantine dropping a slew of projects: including Before Summer Ends, Quarantine Sessions and More than Gold.

Gold Haze told Rome J., “I just want to be in a position to be one of the greats when all this is said and done.”

But the super producer is far from done. In the coming months, Gold Haze plans to release more music soon —  a project called Life in Abundance featuring rapper PeeWee Da Plug, and a solo project called From Here On Out that is executive produced by fellow Chicago producer C-sick. Gold Haze will be rapping on every track.

Rome J. also spoke with TRiiBE reporter Matt Harvey, who recaps the “Year of the Youth: Back to School Event & Peace Walk” at Overton Elementary School. And Katrina Phidd pops in to get us all on track for voting in the 2020 Presidential Election. She’s the communications associate with Chicago Votes.
